Southern Cross Recycling, or SCR group, is a private for-profit organisation that specialises in the recovery and distribution of unwanted and old clothing items at scale. It is the largest clothing recovery organisation in Australia, diverting over 25 million Kg of waste from going to landfill.
Besides being a private organisation, what differentiates SCR group from other clothing donation organisations is the scale at which they operate. Every year SCR group collects 41 million items, and their donation bins by 2 million Aussies annually. It sorts the donated items and resells what is good quality while recycling the rest. As per the SCR group, 70% of the donated clothing items are reused, 15% are recycled into wiper rags and the rest 15% as biofuels.
SCR Group manages over 1,500 drop-off hubs (donation bins) across Australia, which are conveniently located in shopping malls, council parks and schools. A good number of bins are managed by the Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE), while the rest are managed directly. To find a donation drop-off bin near you, enter your postcode above.
It also has a home collection service, Thread:collect, that allows people to book a collection online and donate their clean and usable clothes, shoes and handbags from the comfort of their own homes. Select e-waste items like laptops, blenders, hair dryers, kettles etc., are also accepted. Please contact (03) 9386 8702 or [email protected] for more information.
SCR Group primarily collects clothing items that are in good wearable condition. Oversized items are not accepted.

The donated items must be dropped inside the charity bin and not left outside. For those unaware, illegal dumping or leaving items outside the bins is an offence, as per Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Annually SCR group spends over a million dollars to clear out illegal dumping. To curb this, the SCR group is experimenting with placing a life-sized character, ” Alfonzo the Security Guard,” with big eyes and text mentioning “Illegal dumping is a crime” outside the bins.
Most bins are accessible 24/7, but certain locations restrict entry at night.
The donated items are sorted, and the reusable ones are either sold to op shops or sent to charities. Rest items are sent to the sorting facility in Malaysia, from where they’re further distributed globally as per the demand. The items that can’t be used are either recycled or used as alternately furl for cement kilns. You can rest easy knowing that none of the donated items ends up in the landfill.
